Bil Aelod Arfaethedig – Mark Isherwood AS | Proposed Member Bill - Mark Isherwood MS
Datblygu'r Bil Iaith Arwyddion Prydain (BSL) (Cymru) | Development of the British Sign Language (BSL) (Wales) Bill
Ymateb gan: Carl Lewis | Evidence from: Carl Lewis
Mae'r ddogfen hon yn darparu cyfieithiad o'r ymateb BSL a gafwyd gan Carl Lewis.
I was using BSL growing up, however from about six or seven years old I was mainly using oral forms of communication, and I then developed sign language at a later age, around 13/14 years old. I never had interpreters at school.
I was taught using the oral methods of communication I missed a lot out in terms of what was being said.
In terms of going to the job centre, there were multiple barriers. It was difficult for me understanding what is going on, they told me to bring my mother and father I said I'd rather come myself with an interpreter and explain everything. I wanted to be independent.
Also in terms of doctors they said I should bring my mother and father too. I am my own person. In terms of hospital, there are barriers for me there. I need an interpreter that is so important. There are many deaf people like us and we have these barriers.
Okay…. also I guess in terms of electricity bills being sent to me, there was and is a lots of English text there. It was quite difficult to understand what the messages were in terms of owing money and payments, that is difficult for me due to my deafness. Okay, thank you.
